What is it?

​In Ontario, when selling a vehicle private, retail sales tax is payable when the vehicle ownership is transferred.

However, vehicles transferred between certain family members are exempt from retail sales tax. Such family members include, but are not limited, to: spouse, parent, sibling, child, etc. Only one such tax-exempt transfer is allowed within a 12-month period.

What is required?

Bring the following documents to your local ServiceOntario:

  • a completed Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Vehicle in Ontario (Form 1157E). Download the form here.

  • proof of Ontario vehicle insurance

  • your Ontario driver's licence

  • Safety Standards Certificate (unless transfer is between spouses)

  • Vehicle Ownership Permit with completed back portion

  • a completed plate transfer declaration if transferring the licence plate (this is required for spousal transfers to extempt them from Safety Standards Certificate). Download the form here.
